{"id":579,"date":"2012-01-14T13:32:26","date_gmt":"2012-01-14T18:32:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hackaweek.com\/hacks\/?p=579"},"modified":"2012-01-14T21:49:25","modified_gmt":"2012-01-15T02:49:25","slug":"how-to-mix-a-pan-galactic-gargle-blaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hackaweek.com\/hacks\/how-to-mix-a-pan-galactic-gargle-blaster\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Mix A Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Hack #42 and in honor of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_Adams\" target=\"_blank\">Douglas Adams<\/a>, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy\" target=\"_blank\">The Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide to the Galaxy<\/a> this week&#8217;s hack is a how-to about a drink called the <a href=\"http:\/\/hitchhikers.wikia.com\/wiki\/Pan_Galactic_Gargle_Blaster\" target=\"_blank\">Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>So what does Hack #42 and Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide have in common? Well it&#8217;s the number 42. In the novel, the great computer, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_minor_The_Hitchhiker's_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_characters#Deep_Thought\" target=\"_blank\">Deep Thought<\/a> was asked the question &#8220;what is the answer to life, the universe, and everything?&#8221;. After 7.5 million years of computing it came up with the answer. &#8220;42&#8221; Yes, 42.. that&#8217;s it. <\/p>\n<p>So, here we are in the here and now (supposedly) mixing up the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster!<br \/>\nWatch the video for some fun, then read on for a behind the scenes explanation of how it was done.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qHTkQVOwolA\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Well that was fun!<\/strong><br \/>\nThis project was really a bit of theater with some custom made props. I made up some labels, printed them out and applied them to the bottles with some spray adhesive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was actually in the bottles?<\/strong><br \/>\nOl&#8217; Janx Spirit &#8211; vinegar<br \/>\nSantraginus V Seawater &#8211; water with blue food color<br \/>\nArcturan Mega-Gin &#8211; sugar rock candy with yellow food color<br \/>\nFallian Marsh Gas &#8211; air from an inflated balloon<br \/>\nQualactin Hypermint Extract &#8211; Olive Oil<br \/>\nAlgolian Suntiger Teeth &#8211; Effervescent vitamin C tablet also known by the brand name &#8220;Airborne&#8221;<br \/>\nZamphuor &#8211; water with yellow food color<\/p>\n<p>The table top was covered in cheese cloth and under it was a layer of baking soda.
