Hurricane Irene is heading up the coast towards North Carolina and may be making land fall fairly close to where I live, so I thought it would be a good idea to get an evacuation kit together. I also realized that this would be a good video for this week’s “hack” and so I’ve put together a how to of what you’ll need if you need to evacuate your home in the event of an impending natural disaster.<\/p>\n
Here’s a list of some things you should think of putting together:<\/p>\n
Water – at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days
\nFood – at least enough for 3 to 7 days
\n\u2014 non-perishable packaged or canned food \/ juices
\n\u2014 foods for infants or the elderly
\n\u2014 snack foods
\n\u2014 non-electric can opener
\n\u2014 cooking tools \/ fuel
\n\u2014 paper plates \/ plastic utensils
\nBlankets \/ Pillows, etc.
\nClothing – seasonal \/ rain gear\/ sturdy shoes
\nFirst Aid Kit \/ Medicines \/ Prescription Drugs
\nSpecial Items – for babies and the elderly
\nToiletries \/ Hygiene items \/ Moisture wipes
\nFlashlight \/ Batteries
\nRadio – Battery operated and NOAA weather radio
\nTelephones – Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set
\nCash (with some small bills) and Credit Cards – Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periods
\nKeys
\nToys, Books and Games
\nImportant documents – in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag
\n\u2014 insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.
\nTools – keep a set with you during the storm
\nVehicle fuel tanks filled
\nPet care items
\n\u2014 proper identification \/ immunization records \/ medications
\n\u2014 ample supply of food and water
\n\u2014 a carrier or cage
\n\u2014 muzzle and leash<\/p>\n
